Unlike some of our previous crushes, this month’s crush flies under the radar. In fact, I hadn’t heard of her until the other day, when I fell into the 8a.nu rabbit hole (yet again). While trolling the “Female Route Ranking: Top-10 climbs last 12 months” list I saw at the very top, above Sasha Digiulian, Emilie Pellerin. A few clicks and Google searches later, I found myself crushin’ on Emilie’s perspective, spirit, and straight up stoke for climbing.
The 24-year-old, Quebec native started climbing just 5 years ago and is now a self proclaimed climbing addict. What started out as a 3 week climbing trip in Europe turned into a life on the road, traveling the world in search of amazing climbing. As for grades, she hasn’t broken into 5.14 yet, but she’s chomping at the bit having sent and onsighted several 5.13c’s and d’s. On her website she writes, “I’m best at onsighting…my interest in working routes is limited. I usually try the same route 3 times or less. Then I wait until I get stronger to go back once I forgot all about it. It might not be the most efficient way to write down harder grades in the little notebook, but it is so much more fun! … at least, for me… And… what are the grades after all?”
When she’s not busy onsighting 5.13 sport routes Emilie can be found pushing it on boulders, trad routes, and multi-pitch climbs. This girl truly lives for climbing. It’s like she has all of this “newb” stoke but instead of just flopping around on 5.9’s at the climbing gym like most of us, she’s taking the bull by the horns and living it. Traveling, experiencing, and most of all, climbing. Emilie, we love the way you love climbing and we’re psyched to see where it takes you.
