This past weekend our girl crush of the month, 16-year-old Janja Garnbret, dominated at the women’s only La Sportiva Legends Only Competition. I’m not using the word dominated for effect either; she completed all 5 problems in just 7 total tries, while the other competitors completed 3 problems… combined. So who were these other climbers then? Only repeated World Cup medalists Anna Stöhr, Juliane Wurm, Shauna Coxsey, and Melissa Le Neve. Her performance at this comp alone was enough to pique our interest and reminded us that young guns are coming up and they’re coming up strong.
The Legends Only Comp was by no means Janja’s first time at the rodeo. She is a two-time junior world champion, and in both of her first two World Cup comps she earned silver. While Janja’s success seems to be the product of confidence, committed training, and pure psych, she still has great appreciation for the female climbers who paved the way for her. When asked what it was like to climb alongside her competitors at the Legends Only Comp she replied, “It feels amazing to climb with them. They are all legendary climbers, so they were and still are my role models.”
In addition to her indoor climbing success Janja also loves to test her skills outside. This year alone she took down several high 5.13s and low 5.14s. Amongst these she on-sighted Avatar (5.13d), sent Scrat (5.14b) on her second try, and climbed her hardest grade yet on Miza za šest (5.14c).
Thanks Janja, for keeping us on our toes and bringing your young, bright energy to the world of climbing. Keep it coming!
