Not Your Average (Chalk) Balls

How do you keep your hands chalked? Photo by

With so many chalk balls, how do you choose? Photo by @jiinetiics

For girls who care about which balls they squeeze, we tested a bunch of chalk dispensers that are slightly cooler than average. Does size matter to you? Care for a little friend in your chalk bag? Are the ethics of leave-no-trace high on your priority list? Scented chalk, anyone? There is something for everyone out there, so get comfortable while we give you the run down.

Summer Crag Essentials

Crag-essentials-20161. Moutainsmith Mayhem 35 WSD – Hands down, this is the most comfortable pack I’ve ever worn. The padded waist straps and women’s specific fit make the heaviest loads float lightly on your hips, and you won’t have any more excuses to complain about a long approach with this pack. The stretchy front mesh panel is great for quickly stowing a chalk bag or jacket, and asymmetrical zipper prevents you from needing to dig through a full pack to get to something in the bottom. The pack is rigid in its size (it can double as carry-on luggage), so it can be difficult to carry a sport rack, rope, shoes, and other gear unless you very carefully coil the rope. I would go for a the 55 L option if you’re going to be carrying more to the crag.

evolv metolius

For a boulderer a good crash pad is essential, and now, with more options than ever, choosing the right crash pad can be tricky. We’ve taken some of the work out for you and tested three pads from some of the top climbing companies in the world. Today we’ll run through the pros and cons, specs and features of the Organic Simple Pad, Metolius Session Pad, and Evolv Maverick. Before we get started let me give you a quick intro to each pad. The Organic Simple is exactly that, a simple design with high quality, stiff foam, tough, durable exterior, customizable features, and is made completely in the US of A. The Metolius Session is the most affordable of the pads, and features some extra bells and whistles like a flap closure system with a stash pocket and carpet for wiping off dirty shoes. The Evolv Maverick is a slightly larger pad, with a width of 40″, has a flap closure system, and is built to take a beating. Now, let’s get into the details.
