Scarpa

Scarpa is a family-owned business that has its headquarters and manufacturing facilities for sports footwear in the same locations in northern Italy where it got its start in 1938. In the 1970s, Scarpa continued to push the boundaries of innovation by developing the well-known Rally boot for alpine skiing and pioneering an early high-altitude plastic boot for mountaineering. This boot used to be called the Grinta, but it was later changed to the Inverno in North America and the Vega in other parts of the world.

This boot has been used by many of the world’s best mountaineers and explorers across the Himalayas and Antarctica. Additionally, the military forces of Italy, the United States, France, Spain, and other countries adopted this footwear for use by soldiers serving in harsh environments. Now, it is focusing on developing mountain footwear that features cutting-edge technology. Sandro, Piero, Davide, and Cristina Parisotto are still in charge of the company. When it was first established, Doug Philips launched the business out of his garage in 1983. The initiative was kicked off by a band of dedicated climbers who gathered together at Smith Rock in Oregon’s high desert to test the boundaries of their abilities. Because there wasn’t a lot of climbing gear on the market in the 1980s, they made the executive decision to develop and construct their climbing gear, which soon turned into a successful company.

In the year 2010, Metolius had around 45 employees in Bend, the majority of them being climbers. The term “by climbers for climbers” appears in the company’s mission statement. Over the past ten years, some of the production, such as the fabrication of carabiners, has been relocated offshore.

In the modern era, Metolius is recognized as one of the foremost producers of climbing gear, including equipment for rock climbing, large wall climbing, and bouldering.
