Girl Crush of the Month: Laura Rogora

Laura Rogora

Laura making Italian history on Grandi Gesti (9a/5.14d)

This month we’re crushing on the Ashima of Italy, Laura Rogora. The 14-year-old is the reigning Italian champion in both speed and lead disciplines and earned bronze in lead at the World Youth Championships in 2015. “Yeah, yeah, another comp kid,” you may be thinking, but Laura has impressive talent outdoors as well. Like other teenagers, she enjoys listening to music and chatting with her friends, but in her spare time she’s also become the first Italian female ever to climb 9a/5.14d with her send of Grandi Gesti. What strikes us most about Laura is her impressive focus and maturity both on and off the wall.

Alex on Free Range (V12), just one of so many boulders she’s conquered.

It’s pretty amazing that after more than 3 years of Girl Crushes we have yet to feature Alex Puccio. It’s probably because we thought “Duh, of course we always crush on her, like all year round, not just for a month”. So today, on the heels of Independence Day, we’re giving props to the one of the best American climbers of all time. For the newbies out there Alex is a 9-time national bouldering champion, 13-time World Cup medalist, and has claimed countless boulders outdoors including V14s, Jade and The Wheel of Chaos. This time, we’re inspired by her consistent optimism and drive to perform, despite a few serious injuries along the way, which nearly every climber can relate to.

At just 19 years old, this month’s girl crush, Anak Verhoeven, has already gotten in more climbing than most of us. With climbers for parents, she started climbing age 4 and the sport has since been a defining feature of her life. Not only has she podiumed at many world competitions, including taking gold at the 2015 World Youth Championship in Arco, but she has also accomplished plenty on real rock.

Finding her obsession at 11-years-old, the now 39-year-old Slovenian climber Martina Čufar Potard, has had a life full of climbing. Like many of our girl crushes she has a long pedigree of accomplishments on both plastic and real rock, but what stands out is her unwavering love and excitement for climbing. After so many years she still says, “Climbing is my life! New challenges, new routes, new moves, new places, new friends every day!” Like great food or a warm shower after a cold day, climbing to Martina as she puts it is, “Simply the best!”

Girl Crush of the Month: Claudia Ziegler

Claudia Ziegler

Claudia’s artful eye seamlessly combines climbing and nature.

While Austrian-born Claudia Ziegler loves to climb, she’s better known for her mesmerizing images of climbers, mountain bikers, and skiers. Her fascination with photography began at age six when her parents gave her a camera, and over several decades she has made a life of shooting in her unique style, which she calls “dynamic photography.” She tells us, “It was not until I was 20 that I realized that photography is what I wanted to do. I never thought that I could make a living out of my passion, but my urge was so great that I had no other choice but to follow it.” Her incredible drive and vision are so clearly evident as you scroll through her website or flip through the pages of her latest book, The Young Savages.

Girl Crush of the Month: Caroline Sinno

Caroline Sinno

Entrepreneur and climber, Caroline Sinno, has got lots to smile about. Photo by Nacho Grez.

For 31-year-old climber and entrepreneur Caroline Sinno, climbing is more than a sport; it’s the pillar she’s built her career on. Caroline began climbing in the forest of Fontainebleau with her parents, and has gone on to compile an impressive climbing resume including 105 boulders V9/7C and harder, including 3 of the grade V12/8A+. Aside from actually crushing on rock, Caroline is also a major player in the outdoor industry. A few years ago she founded the rapidly growing company Crimp Oil, which specializes in massage oils made for climbers which is rapidly expanding the range of products offered and its worldwide presence.

This past weekend our girl crush of the month, 16-year-old Janja Garnbret, dominated at the women’s only La Sportiva Legends Only Competition. I’m not using the word dominated for effect either; she completed all 5 problems in just 7 total tries, while the other competitors completed 3 problems… combined. So who were these other climbers then? Only repeated World Cup medalists Anna Stöhr, Juliane Wurm, Shauna Coxsey, and Melissa Le Neve. Her performance at this comp alone was enough to pique our interest and reminded us that young guns are coming up and they’re coming up strong.

Girl Crush of the Month: Heather Weidner

HEATHER1

Photo cred: Jon Glassberg

“Life is short and fragile, go out and get it now”. Inspired by the words of her late mother, Dr. Heather (Robinson) Weidner did just that; as a former veterinarian turned professional climber she is pursuing her passions with abandon. Heather’s jam is to try hard on projects. With unwavering determination, focus and down-right stubbornness, she explains that those who know her call it “Taurus mode”. Jonathon Siegrist interviewed Heather and he’s crushing too (not like that—he’s good friends with her husband). Siegrist said, “I’ve had the privilege to climb with some of the world’s best, but no one that I’ve met has the ambition, persistence and follow through that Heather exhibits.”

Girl Crush of the Month: Mar Álvarez

Mar’s most recent accomplishment, Esclatamasters, 9a/5.14d.

This month we’re crushing on a firefighter. That’s right, a 35-year-old Spanish firefighter by the name of Mar Álvarez, who happens to climb 9a/5.14d in her spare time. About a year ago Mar became the fifth woman ever to climb 9a/5.14d with her send of Era Vella, and then just a few weeks ago she joined an even more elite group of women by climbing yet another 9a/5.14d. On 8a.nu she described Esclatamasters as, “A beautiful and demanding route that tested my limits.” Mar’s winning combination of dedication and deep personal connection to climbing is, without doubt, responsible for her success.

Girl Crush of the Month: Chelsea Rude

Check out that lock off! Photo: Francois Lebeau

You can never use your negative ape index as an excuse again. Why? Chelsea Rude. With a -3 ape index her nickname is T-Rex, but that hasn’t stopped her one bit. As Chelsea puts it, “Don’t make excuses. Get up and go make your dreams a reality.”
