Trango Horizon
The Horizon is part of Trango’s new harness lineup for 2022. The harness’s ventilated foam padding keeps you comfortable while dangling, especially given the hardness of the waistbelt. The huge two-piece waistbelt clasp is a little sticky to tighten with one hand.
But it will get easier with usage as the webbing softens a little. The leg loop buckles did not overlap with foam, and the top edges of the buckles scraped on the legs of several users. A decent all-around beginner harness that covers all the bases for climbers who plan to try a little bit of everything.

Grivel Trend Leopard
The Grivel family of Courmayeur has been creating climbing gear since 1818 when they began making tools for tourists visiting the Mont-Blanc Range. In the early twentieth century, they also invented the crampon. In my climbing, I’ve always looked for a safety harness. But also light, comfortable, and appealing.
On the practical side, the harness is quite small, and if you normally wear a medium, you may need to size up to a large. It’s lightweight and comfy, if not particularly feature-rich. It has a modest, and a little loop at the back of the harness just accommodates a carabiner for a haul line or a belay device. There are elastic tabs for storing ice climbing equipment. This is primarily a gym and sport climbing harness, where its distinct appearance will be recognized. So, the fact that there aren’t many options for storing and moving it shouldn’t affect how well it works.

Metolius Safe Tech Trad
Metolius harnesses in the Safetech series are designed to be more durable and, well, safe. The two belay loops, which double up on this already bombproof site, are the most visible indication of the extra precaution. In North America, Welsh climbing business DMM is better known for its hardware than its harnesses. The Trance, on the other hand, exhibits the same attention to detail and creativity that has made DMM’s other gear so popular. Both the high-end variants of Petzl’s harnesses and its workhorse, the Corax LT, display considerable harness-making expertise of Petzl. In the same vein as its predecessor, the Corax, the Corax LT is a versatile model. But it has only one two-piece clasp on the waistbelt, making it easier to use.
The waistband is covered in closed-cell foam fused. There are additional loops for an ice racking device and a back tab for a tagline or belay gear. However, because of the permanent leg loops, you won’t be able to modify them to suit thicker winter layers.
